The Best Wineries in the Finger Lakes: A Local’s Guide to the 4 "Must-Stops" on Seneca Lake

With over 100 wineries in our backyard, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But for those of us who live here, we have our "North Stars"—the spots that never miss, whether you’re looking for a serious dry Riesling or just a place to hang out on a Saturday afternoon. If you’re heading out this weekend, here are the four pillars of Seneca Lake you shouldn't skip.

1. Three Brothers Wineries & Estates (Geneva)

Three Brothers remains the most versatile destination in the Finger Lakes. Known for its "four-tastings-in-one" campus, it is the premier stop for those who want variety without moving their car.

  • The Experience: The estate is divided into three distinct wineries and a microbrewery (War Horse Brewing Co.).

  • The Vibe: From the refined, estate-focused atmosphere of Stony Lonesome Wine Cellars to the playful, sensory-driven approach at Passion Feet, there is a wine style for every palate.

  • Why it’s a Top Pick: It perfectly captures the desire for a comprehensive craft beverage experience. Don't miss their seasonal Bombshell Hard Ciders or their award-winning dry Rieslings.

2. Fox Run Vineyards (Penn Yan)

Just a short drive down the west side, Fox Run feels like that sophisticated neighbor who also happens to be a great cook.

  • Why we love it: Two words: The Cafe. For us locals, Fox Run is the go-to spot for a mid-wine-trail lunch. Their focus on sustainable farming means the wine feels "clean," and their food pairings actually use ingredients grown right here in the valley.

  • The Move: Grab a glass of their Silvaner and a cheese board, and just look out over the vines. It’s the perfect "slow down" spot.

3. Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery (Lodi)

As one of the oldest wineries on Seneca Lake, Wagner is a pillar of the region. Their iconic octagon-shaped building offers some of the most stunning views of the water.

  • Why we love it: Like Three Brothers, Wagner offers a dual experience with its on-site Wagner Valley Brewing Co.

  • The Move: It’s one of the best spots on the East Side of Seneca Lake for a sunset. Plus, having Wagner Valley Brewing right there means the "beer vs. wine" argument in the car is officially over before it starts.

4. Lakewood Vineyards (Watkins Glen)

When you head down toward the southern tip of the lake, you have to stop at Lakewood.

  • Why we love it: It feels like home. The Stamp family has been running this place for generations, and they treat you like you’ve been coming there for years, even if it’s your first time.

  • The Move: Try the Abby Rose. It’s a local favorite for a reason. Easy-drinking, fruit-forward, and perfect for a Finger Lakes summer evening.

Winery Best Known For Vibe

Local FAQ: Planning Your Route

Which lake is actually the best?

We’re on Seneca, so we’re team Seneca! It’s the deepest, it rarely freezes, and it creates a "microclimate" that makes our grapes world-class. Plus, the drive between Geneva and Watkins Glen is one of the prettiest in the country.

How do I avoid the crowds?

If you want the "local experience," try visiting on a Tuesday or Wednesday. You’ll have the tasting rooms to yourself, and you might actually catch the winemakers or brewers hanging out near the bar.

What should I wear?

This is the Finger Lakes, not Napa. Flannels, boots, and casual layers are the "Geneva Tuxedo." Come as you are.
